What Is Pride Month?

Celebrated annually during the month of June, Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. Commonly referred to as "Stonewall," this event was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. While it is recognized as a marker for "Gay" liberation in the U.S., it is important to acknowledge that multiple LGTBQIA identities -- including transgender people of color -- were pivotal in the success of Stonewall.

The first Pride march was held on June 28, 1970 in New York City, one year after Stonewall.

A Statement for Pride Month

Does your Georgia Tech department, college or organization looking for a statement to use for your communications. Feel free to use the one below!

Pride Statement:

As we celebrate Pride during the month of June, it is important that we acknowledge, accept, and believe that pride thrives in difference. Pride month celebrates the nuanced and valid lived experiences of LGTBQIA people, globally. It celebrates LGBTQIA people of different races and ethnicities, faiths, abilities, ages, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds. LGBTQIA communities are vital to our collective human experience. As we reminisce on the Stonewall protests of 1969 that paved the way for this month-long celebration, we celebrate and take pride in gender and sexuality variance, the power of intersectionality, different lived experiences, and hope for a world that uplifts and is proud of difference. We have the power to reshape our societies for the better and we celebrate the opportunity to continue this journey during Pride month and beyond. Happy Pride!  [You can use this space here to include department/organization specific content.]

Holland will attempt to give readers a sense of what it was really like trying to keep his two identities separate. More info here!
