The Dr. Aby L. Parsons’ Advocacy in Action Award is named after the inaugural director of the LGBTQIA Resource Center. Dr. Parsons brought expertise, creativity, high energy, passion, and dedication to the position and her work.

This award honors an individual (student, faculty, staff, alum) that has demonstrated innovation, leadership, collaboration, and/or educational development in respects to support services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or asexual communities at Georgia Tech throughout the past year. These contributions will have made campus a safer and more inclusive, welcoming, and respectful community for LGBTQIA students, faculty, and/or staff.

The award recognizes any student, faculty, staff, or alumni who has accomplished one or more of the following on campus or in the community at large:

  • Contributed to research, policy, or practice to improve the lives of LGBTQIA people,
  • Worked in service toward dismantling the intersecting systems of oppression that impact the lives of LGBTQIA people,
  • Demonstrated a commitment to centering queer voices in leadership, in the classroom, or in community spaces where these voices are often marginalized, and
  • Created opportunities for accountability, education, or community building within their working or learning environments.

The nomination form should include specific, demonstrable examples of how the nominee has met one or more of the above criteria.

This award is open to all nominees, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
